Plans to replace the runway and provide terminal facilities at
Luton Airport have been rejected, it has been announced.
The airport said that it will now focus on maximising its current facilities and claimed that the redevelopment plans had been created in line with the government's wish to see more expansion in London.
Demetrio Ullastres, chairman of
Luton Airport parent company TBI, told BBC News 24 that the hub now wants to concentrate on "making the most" of the existing site.
"We are committed to the delivery of facilities to meet the needs of our customers and at the same time to fulfil our shareholders' expectations," he commented.
Airlines that fly from the
airport include
Aer Arann and business class carrier Silverjet, serving destinations in
Ireland and
New York respectively.
Luton Airport will publish development proposals for the next eight years later in 2007.
