A plane capable of using less fuel and emitting fewer carbon emissions than traditional aircraft has been launched by aeroplane maker Boeing.
The company unveiled its 787 Dreamliner, which also boasts the ability to carry out quieter take-offs and landings, at a special ceremony yesterday.
Scheduled to begin commercial passenger service in May 2008, the aircraft will make its first flight in August or September this year, with the first plane to be completed in a factory in Everett in the US.
The plane has already been ordered by 47 customers around the globe, marking the most successful launch of a commercial aeroplane in the world.
"We are gratified that the 787 has been so strongly validated in the marketplace by our customers. Their response is proof that the Dreamliner will bring real value to our airline customers, passengers and the global air transportation system," commented Scott Carson, president and chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Airlines that have been confirmed to have placed orders for the
environmentally-friendly 787 Dreamliner include
Air Berlin,
Virgin Atlantic,
Air New Zealand,
Icelandair and
Continental Airlines.
