The number of flights departing from and landing at
London City Airport could rise from 80,000 to 120,000 a year if proposals from the hub get the green light from the authorities.
Officials at the
airport have submitted a planning application that includes strategies to use existing runways to cope with up to 3.9 million passengers a year by 2010.
The airport says that its proposals do not call for night flights or changes to operating hours and that if approved the plans will lead to the creation of about 1,000 new jobs.
London City Airport chief executive Richard Gooding commented: "The proposed growth of the airport ensures we can serve the visitors that will be attracted to the area in advance of the 2012 Olympic Games."
The hub currently deals with flights travelling to more than 30 European destinations, including
Amsterdam,
Dublin,
Madrid,
Paris and
Stockholm. It is used by about 16 airlines in total.
