A 24-hour strike by maintenance workers at two of the biggest
airports in the UK looks set to go ahead next week after crisis talks over pay failed to yield results.
Yesterday, members of the GMB union employed by support services firm Emcor rejected a pay offer and failed to come to an agreement with company officials to avert the strike at
Heathrow and
Gatwick airports.
The strike, due to take place on September 7th, could affect flights operated by
British Airways as the workers in question normally engage in facilities management and electrical maintenance in the passenger areas of the two hubs.
Before yesterday's meeting, GMB organiser Rob Kelsall commented: "The mass meeting fixed the first day of strike action for September 7th and it will be followed by further dates if an acceptable pay offer that meets our members' aspirations is not forthcoming."
Emcor has said that it is unlikely the strike will have a great effect, however, as it will bring in temporary staff to cover the striking workers.
