Travellers booking their holidays at the last minute have been warned to ensure they take out adequate insurance before they leave the country.
Sainsbury's Bank suggests that the number of people heading abroad without insurance cover is on the rise, partly due to the increase in those purchasing late deals.
It is estimated by the financial services provider that around three million holidaymakers and travellers leave the country without first organising their insurance.
Steve Johnson, head of travel insurance at Sainsbury's Bank, remarked: "Greater use of the internet and growing competition in the travel industry means that there are many holiday bargains to be had."
However, he added that without purchasing the correct insurance "a holiday can soon turn into a nightmare if disaster strikes".
