"Palin effect" to boost eastern European travel?

Some Britons may be more likely to look into holidays in relatively unknown eastern European destinations as a result of Michael Palin's new television series, it has been claimed.

Dubbed the Palin effect, this was previously seen three years ago after the famous traveller's televised exploits in the Himalayas led to increased interest in breaks to the region, adventure holiday specialist Intrepid Travel told TravelMole.

In his new series, Palin visits countries that are generally thought to be near the edge of tourists' radars, such as Bosnia, Albania, Macedonia, Romania and Slovakia.

"The great thing about the way Michael Palin travels is that he really gets under the skin of a country; travelling on local transport, staying in traditional accommodation and generally doing what the locals do," commented Daniel Pawlyn of Intrepid Travel.

Michael Palin's New Europe begins on BBC Two on September 16th and will run over a seven-week period.
