Looking to jet off on an exotic autumn break? Why not step on a
flight to Goa and join in the celebrations during one of the biggest Hindu festivals of the year?
Diwali is a four-day festival that celebrates the ancient story of Rama, a king and incarnation of the deity Vishnu, and his triumph over the evil Ravana after spending 14 years in exile from his own kingdom.
While there is no official set date for Diwali, it is expected to take place on or around November 9th this year and is celebrated in a number of ways. The most well-known practice during this time is that of lighting numerous little lamps and lanterns and placing them around the home.
In
Goa, Diwali celebrations tend to be focused on one day, which sees Hindu families and friends socialise and take part in religious ceremonies. Huge effigies of Narkasura, a demon, are burned at dawn, while Diwali night is greeted with spectacular fireworks displays.
The Hindu new year begins on the day after Diwali, with revellers visiting their closest friends and family and exchanging sweets and gifts to mark the beginning of another year.
