The number of British holidaymakers who visited
Thailand last year rose 9.48 per cent to more than 745,500, new figures have revealed.
In addition, Irish visitor numbers to the
south-east Asian country soared by nearly 14 per cent, meaning that a total of 802,519 people from the UK and Ireland holidayed in
Thailand in 2006, the statistics from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) showed.
December was found to be the most popular month for British travellers to head to Thailand, with national airline
Thai Airways also confirming that it had seen similar UK and Ireland visitor trends in its flight bookings, TravelDailyNews.com reports.
"We are delighted with Thailand's progress and TAT far exceeded its target of 700,000 UK visitors, thanks to a large influx towards the end of the year," commented Tanes Petsuwan, director of TAT London.
Popular destinations in Thailand include
Bangkok,
Phuket and
Chiang Mai.
