Emirates has announced a new feature for its award-winning
inflight entertainment system.
The carrier has installed brand new technology into its ice system to allow passengers to switch on and off closed captions or subtitles available in up to 12 languages for certain films.
Previously, travellers had to cope with subtitles that were embedded in the picture itself. However, the new technology means that passengers can now benefit from an option similar to that seen on DVD players.
Closed captioning is particularly useful for those who are hard of hearing, as they can see what sound effects are being used as well as what the actors are saying.
"Although initially we've only created two films in the new format, we hope that in the future this technology will be available on the majority of the movies onboard," commented Patrick Brannelly, vice president of passenger communications and visual services for
Emirates.
The ice system offers passengers 15 video channels to choose from. Collectively they provide over 40 movies, more than 30 hours of television programming and over 50 hours of audio.
