Increasing numbers of carriers are installing seats capable of folding out into a flat bed in their
premium cabins in an attempt to beat off competition and attract more flyers, it has been reported.
Airlines such as
Virgin Atlantic,
British Airways,
Cathay Pacific and
Singapore Airlines have opted to fit such seats in their first or
business class cabins, the Associated Press reports.
One example of a new twist on the flat bed phenomenon is Singapore Airlines' first class suites onboard its new
Airbus A380 planes. These suites are almost entirely enclosed and offer facilities such as a large television screen, wardrobe and fully flat double bed.
Robert Buckman of travel distribution system provider Amadeus North America said these suites can be likened to "condos in the clouds".
"The sleeping arrangements and other amenities go well beyond the lie-flat seating option, but so does the price," he remarked.
"These private suites are designed to attract a certain type of luxury or very VIP traveller looking for a very exclusive travel experience."
Singapore Airlines' first commercial A380 flight took place earlier this year, flying from
Singapore to
Sydney and carrying passengers who had largely obtained their tickets via a charity auction on eBay.
It is expected to use the aircraft on its
flights to Singapore from
Heathrow Airport during the first three months of 2008.
