London has won the title of Destination of the Year at the World Travel Awards.
Announced last week, the capital beat off competition from the likes of
Sydney,
New York,
Barbados and the
Maldives to scoop the prestigious accolade.
Welcoming the award, James Bidwell, chief executive of tourism organisation Visit London, said that the title came after an "incredible" 12 months for the city.
"From building new world-class venues to attracting international sporting events, our intention is to continue this momentum in the lead up to and beyond the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games," he commented.
London has seen a number of major events this year, including the opening of the revamped Wembley Stadium, the China's Terracotta Army exhibition at the British Museum and the Tour de France Grand Depart.
Visitors to the city over the festive season can currently check out the Spitalfields Winter Festival and numerous plays and pantomimes, including A Christmas Carol and Cinderella.
