Colombia,
Australia,
Botswana and
China have been predicted to be the top travel hotspots for holidaymakers in 2008.
According to the Association of British Travel agents (ABTA), a number of huge sporting events and the forthcoming release of potential movie blockbusters set in
far-flung climes will stimulate travel to these countries, among other nations.
Films such as Love In The Time of Cholera, which is set in
Cartagena, Australia-based movie The Cup and the televised version of the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alex McCall Smith, set in Botswana, will all help to ignite interest in these destinations, the organisation says.
Meanwhile, the 2008 Olympics is likely to result in an increase in the number of people flying to China, with nearby
Singapore set to see a tourism boost when it plays host to the very first Formula One night race.
"Travelling is always an inspiring way of spending our free time and with so many exciting events and enticing destinations, our enthusiasm for overseas holidays in 2008 remains high," commented Justin Fleming, president of ABTA.
Earlier this year, a report by Olsberg SPI found that a number of destinations within the UK have seen a sharp spike in visitor numbers following the release of films based in those locations.
