Almost 11 million flyers used a BAA
airport last month, according to new figures.
Statistics released by the airport operator revealed that 10.9 million people passed through one of its hubs in December, up 0.7 per cent on the figure reported for December 2006.
More passengers were found to take North Atlantic flights last month compared with the previous year, while
Heathrow saw the largest traffic increase out of all seven airports.
"Although operations were disrupted in the immediate run up to Christmas as a result of fog, the scale of cancellations and lost traffic was less than experienced over the same period in 2006," BAA said in a statement.
Holidaymakers using all of BAA's airports, except
Stansted, may now be subject to changed rules regarding the carriage of hand luggage onboard flights.
Depending on individual airlines' policies, flyers can now take more than one piece of hand luggage onto a flight when passing through a BAA airport.
Stansted Airport will fall in line with the new rules later this year.
