Demand for flights from UK passengers is continuing grow, according to new research.

A report from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has suggested that traffic at British airports has seen an average growth rate of six per cent a year since the mid-1970s.

While growth in 2006 was slower than in previous years, certain segments of air travel - such as business class flights and journeying to visit family and friends - have seen demand rise at a faster pace in recent times.

The CAA's research also indicated that the average UK traveller takes about two and a quarter return flights every year.

Dr Harry Bush of the CAA said that the general slowdown in flight traffic growth could be attributed to shrinking spending by consumers.

The research "also indicates a significant impact ... from the increasing internationalisation of the UK economy, with the consequent growth in air travel to visit family members or friends in other countries", he added.

Last month, the CAA advised Britons to ensure their flights are protected under the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing scheme when booking holidays for this summer.
