A record number of British tourists went overseas during 2006, new figures have revealed.
The latest travel trends report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that 69.5 million trips abroad were made by UK residents in 2006 - up 4.7 per cent on the previous year.
Popular destinations for these travelling Britons included
Spain and
France, which accounted for more than a third of all overseas visits.
Meanwhile, locations in
India and
Egypt experienced the highest growth in terms of British visitor figures outside of
Europe.
The ONS report also indicated that flights were by far the most common form of transport for those
holidaying overseas, with more than eight in ten trips abroad making use of air travel.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents, advance reservations for holidays to
Turkey, Egypt,
Portugal and the
USA have indicated that these destinations will be particularly popular this year.
