The most desired gift this Valentine's Day is a
romantic weekend away, new research has revealed.
Some 56 per cent of Britons would most like to indulge in an amorous getaway to mark the occasion this year, the survey by alpharooms.com suggested.
While four in ten of those polled said they had no preference as to a specific destination as long as they were with their partner, men were most likely to opt for a beach holiday, with women choosing a city break.
However, when it came to other types of gift, the poll discovered that more than six in ten Britons expect to be disappointed with their presents this year.
"It was surprising to see that the majority of people expected to receive nothing at all on Valentine's Day and it seems that as a nation we're still not very imaginative with our gifts," Sarah Beale of alpharooms.com remarked.
According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators, city breaks are traditional favourites among those heading abroad for Valentine's Day, with
Paris being a perennially popular location.
However, it says that more offbeat destinations, such as
Reykjavik and
Marrakech, are also rising in popularity.
