European city breaks most popular in February
The most popular type of holiday for those travelling this month is a city break in Europe, according to a new survey.

Nearly four in ten of those planning to jet overseas in February intend to take in a city on the European continent, the poll by American Express revealed.

About 14 per cent of respondents said they had planned a family holiday, while five per cent chose a spa getaway and three per cent opted for a ski break.

Valentine's Day was found to be the greatest influence on February trips for Britons, with 48 per cent of those planning a passion-filled getaway consisting of working couples making the time to go away.

Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of those surveyed said location was not a factor when planning to propose on February 14th - ways in which romantic Brits said they were going to pop the question included going down on one knee on a ski slope and in a hot air balloon.

"The variety of romantic breaks being taken in terms of location and new ideas about how to pop the big question dispels notions of there being a typical or average way to spend Valentine's Day," remarked Chris Rolland of American Express.

Valentine's Day is one of the most popular days on which to get engaged. According to Halifax, men are likely to spend at least one month's worth of wages on the perfect engagement ring for the occasion.
