Holidaymakers intending to take a city break in
London might like to know that one publication believes the capital's glamorous West End has now been surpassed by east London in terms of attractions.
According to the latest London guide from Lonely Planet, east London now has a host of sights, activities, bars and restaurants that can rival those found in the traditionally more popular West End.
Clerkenwell, Shoreditch and Spitalfields were identified as the "most creative and exciting districts", along with Hoxton Square and Brick Lane.
Lonely Planet also said that east London is the place to go for a cosmopolitan experience, as well as to hear new music, sample "cutting edge" cuisine and experience the build-up to the 2012 Olympics.
"A few years ago, the West End had a lot of the draw cards for Londoners and visitors alike; now its position is being challenged on every level," commented Steve Fallon, author of the
London guide.
"The Docklands have become the key financial hub, the clubs and bars in the east of the capital are thriving on their cool reputation, whilst the West End's nightlife is associated with overpriced drinks and Z-list celebrities."
Just a few of the attractions that east London is home to include the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and Greenwich's various museums.
