The majority of Britons who got married in the 1980s believe that
honeymoons are now significantly more extravagant than they were in their day, new research has revealed.
Some 90 per cent of those surveyed by esure said they thought honeymoons are more lavish now than they were 20 years ago.
One indicator of this is the finding that just seven per cent of newlyweds visited more than one country as part of their honeymoon in the 1980s, compared with nearly 20 per cent in the last eight years.
Relaxing holidays on the beach have become more popular among honeymooners in the last two decades, while more people are now having longer engagements in order to save some extra cash for a particularly special honeymoon, the poll also found.
"With the rise in the number of people cohabiting before they get married nowadays, the honeymoon is seen as a much bigger deal, as it offers the chance to have a dream holiday before couples can truly settle down to married life," commented Mike Pickard of esure.
According to the St Petersburg Times, however, more couples are opting for a short "mini-moon" straight after their weddings, only going on a longer honeymoon later on.
