London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson has renewed calls for a brand new airport to be built in
London.
The Conservative MP told BBC Radio 4's World At One show that there was little reason to focus all expansion efforts on
Heathrow Airport, which recently opened its brand new
Terminal 5 and is hoping to build a third runway.
He said that there should be a new debate over whether the capital could feasibly play host to a new hub with solid
green credentials instead.
"I think it's time that we revived the idea of a new airport, a more environmentally-friendly airport, in the Thames estuary that could deliver a long-term solution," he commented.
The comments came after the House of Commons transport committee published a report suggesting that passengers would most benefit if BAA's monopoly on the aviation market was ended by breaking up its ownership of some of the UK's biggest airports.
