British Airways has told passengers that it has had to cancel further flights from Terminal 5 at
Heathrow Airport following problems with baggage handling systems yesterday (March 27th).
The airline said in a statement that it plans to operate over 80 per cent of its domestic and European flights today, including all of its long-haul services.
Passengers should make sure they check whether their flights are running before leaving for the airport, the carrier advised.
Flyers scheduled to depart on cancelled flights leaving between March 27th and 30th will be able to rebook to the same destination while retaining the validity of their original tickets or rebook to the nearest city to the destination within three days of the original departure. Alternatively, they can apply for a refund.
Those expecting to transfer via
Terminal 5 today can rebook onto another flight to the same location within 14 days of the original departure date.
"It is extremely disappointing that disruption happened on the first day of our operations from Terminal 5,"
British Airways said.
"The move to Terminal 5 is one of the biggest and most complex airport moves ever undertaken. We are working hard, together with airport operator BAA, to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
Meanwhile, former British Airways executive Jamie Bowden told Channel 4 news that the carrier needs to resolve the situation "very quickly", after about 34 flights were cancelled yesterday and queues built up "badly".
