UK carrier
bmi is to begin trialling
mobile phone check-in services on some of its routes this month.
The three-month trial will see passengers able to have their boarding passes sent to their MMS-supported mobile phones or PDAs instead of using paper versions.
Flyers will be able to opt for mobile boarding passes when checking in online for flights from
Edinburgh,
Manchester and
Belfast to
London Heathrow only.
Customers enter their mobile numbers during the check-in process and receive an electronic boarding pass a few minutes later. Those with luggage can use bmi's dedicated fast bag drop desk at the airport.
Mobile check-in services could be rolled out across the entire bmi network should the trial prove successful.
A growing number of airlines are adopting mobile check-in procedures, with
Lufthansa launching its own such service on flights from
Hamburg to
Munich and
Frankfurt last month.
