American Airlines has announced that it is to discontinue its flights between
Stansted Airport and
New York from July 2nd.
The airline said that it will still operate
New York services from
Heathrow Airport, however. The move comes as the carrier seeks to cut costs in the face of rising fuel prices.
Passengers affected by the announcement will be contacted by the carrier in due course and will be placed on alternative flights, American Airlines said.
Responding to the decision, Nick Barton of
Stansted Airport said he was "disappointed" with the move.
"We continue to work closely with airlines keen to commence services from Stansted and with those already here looking to further develop their existing European networks," he commented.
American Airlines is set to make further changes to its domestic and international schedule in order to reduce capacity and bring costs down over the next few weeks.
