United Airlines has become the first US carrier to add compatibility with the iPod and iPhone devices to its
inflight entertainment system.
The airline announced that the development will allow passengers in first and
business class seats to play content from their devices on a 15.4-inch personal screen.
Washington will be the base for the launch of the first aircraft offering iPod connectivity, which will operate primarily on transatlantic routes.
Graham Atkinson, executive vice-president of United Airlines, said: "Our guests may now watch or listen to what they want, when they want with programming they choose.
"United will continue to provide services and technology that makes our customers' travel experiences more relaxed and enjoyable."
People travelling from the UK can catch flights with United Airlines to a number of destinations, including
New York,
Los Angeles,
San Francisco and
Chicago.
The carrier is set to carry out a reconfiguration of all of its international, wide-body aircraft over the next two years, which will lead to new lie-flat seats and more on-demand entertainment options.
