Visitors to
New York this summer will have a striking new attraction to visit – a set of four man-made waterfalls along the city's East River.
The four installations, which were created by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, are located on Governor's Island, under the Brooklyn bridge and on two piers on the river.
Travellers in
New York will be able to see the waterfalls, which are visible from both the Manhattan and Brooklyn sides of the river, until October 13th.
The impressive creations measure some 30 metres in height and between ten and 20 metres in width.
Speaking at the waterfalls' inauguration ceremony on June 27th, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said they were "an unbelievable sight" and a symbol of the "energy and vitality" of the waterfront.
Mr Eliasson told AFP that the installations were "about time and experiencing space".
He added: "Water has great potential to be both physical and very elusive, it can be many different things for many different people."
