East Midlands Airport has announced that it handled 534,690 passengers in May, making it the first month in the airport's history to bring more than half a million travellers through the gateway.
The level of traffic flow also represented a 10.7 per cent increase on the same month of 2007 and made May the 26th consecutive month of passenger growth at East Midlands Airport.
Holiday periods were an important factor in the airport's success in May, with more than 65,000 passengers travelling over the first bank holiday weekend and over 77,000 people using the gateway during the spring bank holiday.
The most popular destinations from East Midlands Airport over these holiday periods were
Palma,
Alicante,
Malaga,
Dublin and
Faro.
Airport managing director Penny Coates said: "This is a remarkable achievement given the current industry trends.
"It's evidence that passengers choosing to fly from East Midlands appreciate the convenience, comfort and ease that we offer to get their journey off to a great start."
Domestic scheduled routes were among the most popular from East Midlands Airport in May, with a 16.6 per cent year-on-year passenger increase, as well as international scheduled flights (10.3 per cent).
