Newham Council is currently consulting on proposals that could see
London City Airport hosting thousands more flights.
Operations at the east
London airport could increase from 80,000 to 120,000 flights per year if the plans get the green light.
Those opposed to the proposals have said that more flights would lead to excessive levels of noise. Airport spokesman Charles Buchanan claimed that expansion would lead to substantial benefits for London.
"This expansion will create economic activity in the area and provide opportunities for employment for another thousand people," he told BBC News.
London City Airport is seen primarily as a gateway for
business travellers but in recent years it has launched an increasing number of leisure services.
Carriers including
British Airways,
SAS and
Lufthansa fly from London City Airport to destinations such as
Berlin,
Copenhagen and
Edinburgh.
