Rio hits top 3 for 'wonders of the world'
Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue has been named the third most popular 'modern wonder of the world' in a new survey.
The poll, conducted by Halifax, sought to find the most recognised landmarks in the world by questioning 2,000 Britons.
Rio's statue was opened to the public in 1931 after nine years of building work. Positioned at the summit of Corcovado mountain, the figure with outstretched arms looks over the city.
Rio missed out on the top two places in the survey to Sydney's Opera House and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Also featuring in the top ten were the Palm in Dubai, a palm-shaped group of man made islands, and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
"The top ten modern wonders reflect the diversity of architecture around the world, while the wonders of the British Isles is a reminder of the stunning array of treasures that can be found right here on our doorstep," said Vicky Watson from Halifax.
Among the top British landmarks were Stonehenge, Big Ben and the Blackpool Tower.
A recent study from Cater Allen private bank revealed that people in the UK spend £64 billion on holidays each year.
