Spain will serve as the location for the launch of one of the world's most famous sailing competitions in October.
The Volvo Ocean Race will get underway from the port of
Alicante on October 11th before setting off around the world to give sailing enthusiasts plenty of opportunities to combine their hobby with a holiday.
Competing teams will sail around the west coast of Africa and dock in the city of
Cape Town in
South Africa, where the second leg will begin on November 15th.
The gruelling nine-month race will also have stages launching from
Singapore on January 18th,
Rio de Janeiro on April 11th and
Boston on May 16th, among others.
With a history spanning 35 years, the Volvo Ocean Race is the oldest round-the-world regatta with stopovers.
It was formerly held every four years but is now a biennial event and regularly attracts media and public attention around the world.
