Travel 'no 1 ambition for retirees'
Going travelling is the top priority for people in retirement, according to a new survey.
Scottish Widows carried out research that found that nearly half (45 per cent) of people go travelling during their post-work years, making it the most popular activity during retirement.
More than a quarter (27 per cent) of retirees take up a new hobby, according to the survey, while nearly one in ten (nine per cent) keep their brains busy by attending evening classes.
However, the research also found that people hoping to go travelling will have to plan in advance, with nearly half (49 per cent) of people currently working not saving adequately for retirement.
Ian Naismith of Scottish Widows said: "It is encouraging to see that so many people are enjoying themselves after they retire, but it is vital that people who are still working realise the difference between wanting a good retirement and actually planning for one."
He added: "Retirement should be about enjoying life."
Recent research by Hostel World found that Morocco is top of the list of up-and-coming backpacker destinations, with other popular spots including Egypt, Japan and Slovakia.
