A campaign is being launched to further boost the tourism industry in
Cape Town and the Western Cape province of
South Africa, according to reports.
South Africa's travel industry is already in a healthy state, with Simon Grindrod,
Cape Town's mayoral committee member for tourism, revealing that the national market growth rate is around 8.3 per cent, compared to the international average of 6.3 per cent.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Association of South African Travel Agents, Mr Grindrod said that the Western Cape can bring even more success to the country if it offers an "ethical and responsible product", the Cape Argus reports.
He said that a responsible tourism programme is being implemented to turn Cape Town into a globally-recognised destination in this sector of the industry.
"We want to stay on top, and through responsible tourism we will," he said.
Mr Grindrod also spoke to the Cape Argus about the exact nature and value of responsible tourism, saying: "It focuses on how we do business in the city, on how companies treat their staff and on being environmentally friendly at all times."
Cape Town is one of South Africa's leading tourist destinations, boasting attractions such as Robben Island and offering access to Table Mountain.
