Dubai mall to undergo biggest ever expansion
The Mall of the Emirates in Dubai is set to undergo the largest expansion in its history, it has been announced.
Just under half a billion dirhams (£75 million) will be invested in adding several new facilities to the existing mall, including an additional 10,500 square metres of space for retailers and service providers.
The shopping centre will also be given a direct link to the Dubai metro system and parking spaces to accommodate an extra 750 vehicles.
More than 2.4 million people visit the Mall of the Emirates every month, making it one of the leading shopping centres in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Fuad Mansoor Sharaf, the mall's vice president, said: "This major investment for the UAE's favourite shopping destination is imperative in order to meet the increasing demand from newer retailers, who seek a presence in the mall.
"Since we opened in 2005, we have broken many records, some of which were only meant to be achieved much later."
The expansion programme is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2010.
