Regional airline
Flybe has announced that it picked up its second environmental award of the year this week.
The carrier picked up the 2008
Brussels Airport Environmental Award ahead of competition from some major rivals, including
British Airways,
Lufthansa,
Etihad Airways and
American Airlines.
Last month, Flybe was given a 'special merit for commitment to the environment' at the Budgie Awards.
The airline has pursued a number of environmental initiatives, including the investment of $3 billion (£1.9 billion) in its aircraft fleet, which will reportedly be one of the most fuel efficient in the world by the end of 2009.
Mike Rutter, the airline's chief commercial officer, said: "We're honoured to receive this award from Brussels Airport that recognises Flybe's environmental credentials.
"Our $3 billion investment into a dual type, state-of-the-art environmentally sensitive fleet and the launch of the world's first and only eco-label for the aviation industry, have both contributed to Flybe taking an industry lead and making a significant contribution in this area."
With more than 190 routes serving 13 countries, Flybe claims to be the largest and most successful regional airline in
Europe.
