Greater accessibility and a growing sense of adventure among holidaymakers are making far-flung places such as
Peru and
South Korea increasingly attractive destinations, experts have claimed.
While recent figures released by the Office of National Statistics show that the number of visits made abroad by Britons between June and August was down one per cent on the previous three quarters, travel industry insiders have revealed that those who are managing to get away are now more likely than ever to head to somewhere off the beaten track.
A spokesman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) explained: "The world is becoming a smaller place and becoming more accessible, places that were looked upon as far flung not that long ago.
"People are more aware of what's available now [countries such as Peru are] not the end of the Earth like [they] used to be."
However, at the same time, he added that a sizeable proportion of Brits heading overseas for Christmas are still opting for destinations with a homely spirit, making the 'British-feeling' Caribbean particularly attractive at this time of year.
