Sri Lanka expecting a tourism boom

Sri Lanka's Tourist Board has announced plans to encourage more foreign travellers to visit the country, it has been reported.

The organisation said that it planned to make changes to the tourism industry which would see visitor number rise to 1.5 million over the next four years, according to the country's Daily Mirror newspaper.

A number of development schemes are said to be taken up in the months to come including developing more resorts in different provinces.

It also said that it expected China Bay Airport, which is currently under construction, to also encourage more people to come to Sri Lanka.

Chairman of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management Bernard Goonatillake said that he remained positive that the current economic crisis will not affect visitor numbers in the future.

He added that better security in hotels and tourist hot-spots is set to be introduced to ensure travellers feel safe when on holiday.

Sri Lanka is an island located around 31kms off the southern coast of India.
