Cyprus president inaugurates new airport
The president of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, attended a ceremony over the weekend to inaugurate the new international airport in the tourist city of Paphos.
Scheduled to open on November 17th, the new airport is expected to handle some 2.7 million passengers a year.
Speaking at the inauguration event on November 8th, Mr Christofias said that the Cyprus government would continue to offer support to the tourism industry through the new gateway.
"Particular emphasis is given on supporting the tourist industry and maintaining the tourist traffic to Cyprus at least at the level of previous years," he said.
The new Paphos airport was delivered on time and on budget after 27 months of construction and took its design influences from the city's mythical relationship with the Greek goddess Aphrodite.
Work on another new airport is currently underway in the city of Larnaca on the east coast of Cyprus. This hub is expected to open some time in November 2009.
