The
Dominican Republic was named this year's top destination for a
golf holiday in
the Caribbean and Latin America region at a recent event in
Spain.
On receiving the award from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), Francisco Javier Garcia, minister of tourism in the Dominican Republic, said it represented the "consolidation of the development of golf" on the island.
He added: "At the moment we are developing courses of exceptional quality in the Dominican Republic. The new projects represent higher investment in 2009 than for the past four years.
"We will certainly use this award to continue working not only to be the number one golf destination for Latin America and the Caribbean, but to be the number one golf destination in the world."
Other winners at the IAGTO awards ceremony in Marbella included
Dubai, which was named the 'golf destination of the year' in the Africa, Gulf states and Indian Ocean region.
New Zealand picked up the equivalent award for the
Asia and
Australasia region, while
Kenya was named the year's 'undiscovered golf destination'.
