Guide publisher lists top ten cities for 2009

Destination guide publisher DK Eyewitness Travel has compiled a list of the top ten cities to visit in 2009, which includes Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and Washington DC.

Vilnius will be Europe's Capital of Culture in 2009 and is planning some 900 cultural events, including a book fair in February and Street Musician Day in May.

Other European cities to receive a recommendation for 2009 include Bristol, Gdansk, Copenhagen and Vienna.

Buenos Aires in Argentina will also be worth a visit next year, according to DK Eyewitness Travel, with the first ever Foster & Partners design project in Latin America set to open in the Puerto Madero district in June.

People planning a trip to the USA may be interested in seeing Washington, which is reportedly "fresh with reinvigorated patriotism", or staying in the new Hyatt and Four Seasons hotels in Seattle.

Travellers who have their eyes on Africa for 2009 holidays were urged to visit Cape Town in South Africa or see the "spiritual and cultural hub" of Fez in Morocco.
