KLM to turn 90 this year

The year 2009 will be significant for the Dutch airline KLM as it will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its founding in October.

According to KLM, its 90 years in business make it the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name.

The carrier will arrange a series of events and celebrations throughout the year in the lead-up to its anniversary date of October 7th.

On January 1st, the year of festivities got underway with a special 'celebration flight' that passed over all 12 provinces in the Netherlands.

Peter Hartman, the airline's chief executive, said: "KLM is proud of its Dutch heritage.

"This is why we're starting off our anniversary year with a celebration flight involving people from all the provinces of the Netherlands."

KLM operates the bulk of its flights from its base in Amsterdam, some of which are carried out in partnership with Air France and Northwest Airlines.
