United Airlines to enable inflight internet use

United Airlines will boost the range of inflight technology options on offer to travellers this year when it makes internet access available on some of its services.

The carrier will initially launch the Aircell Gogo inflight internet system on its premium service transcontinental flights from New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Set to be introduced in the second half of the year, the facility will enable users of laptops and other Wi-Fi enabled devices to surf the internet, check emails and send instant messages.

The service will be available to United Airlines customers travelling in all classes for a fee of $12.95 (£8.80).

Dennis Cary, the airline's senior vice-president, said: "We are investing in products and services that are most important to our customers, and having Wi-Fi access on board is something that they have told us is key to making their flights more productive and enjoyable."

Jack Blumenstein, president and chief executive of Aircell, said that the company's deal with United Airlines was a good way to "usher in 2009 as the year of inflight internet".

Aircell is currently working with a number of operators to provide inflight web access, including American Airlines and Delta Airlines.
