A new railway station has been opened at
East Midlands Airport that is expected to bring benefits for both passengers and the environment.
Transport secretary Geoff Hoon opened the new station yesterday (January 26th) as part of an initiative to encourage the use of trains to reach the airport rather than cars.
East Midlands Parkway station will be served by more than 100 trains every day, including up to four services an hour to
London.
Mr Hoon said the new terminal provides easy access to East Midlands Airport from the national rail network and creates a "brand new regional link" with
London.
He added: "We want to encourage more people to use public transport to ease congestion on our roads and one of the best ways of doing this is to offer more choice, which is exactly what this new station does."
A dedicated shuttle bus service linking the train station with the airport will operate every 30 minutes between 07:00 and 23:30 GMT.
Bmi,
Eastern Airways and
bmibaby are among the airlines that offer flights from East Midlands Airport, serving destinations including
Brussels,
Aberdeen and
Nice.
