Universal planning new park in Beijing
Film production company Universal Studios has plans to open a new theme park in Beijing, according to reports.
The proposed park could cost more than 10 billion yuan (£1 billion) and would be jointly owned by Universal and the state-operated organisation responsible for promoting tourism in Beijing.
A Beijing city government spokeswoman told Reuters: "Universal has filed an application to build a theme park in Beijing and the project is being screened by the government."
The news provider also heard from a Beijing Tourism executive that a team had been set up specifically to handle the proposal for the new theme park.
Universal Studios currently has three theme parks open in Orlando, Florida; Hollywood, California and Osaka, Japan.
Construction is currently underway on parks in Singapore and Dubai, both of which are expected to open in 2010, while a new Universal Studios attraction in South Korea is set to begin welcoming visitors in 2012.
