Cathay Pacific wins top honour at World Airline Awards
Cathay Pacific was named airline of the year at the 2009 Skytrax World Airline Awards.
At the first live Skytrax awards ceremony held in Hamburg last week, the Hong Kong-based carrier picked up the top honour ahead of Singapore Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Qatar Airways and Emirates.
A top ten dominated by carriers based in the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions was completed by Qantas, Etihad Airways, Air New Zealand, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways.
In other key categories, Virgin Atlantic was recognised for the quality of its business class lounges and premium economy services, while Singapore Airlines was named the best first class operator.
On a regional basis, Continental Airlines picked up the top honour in North America, Swiss was named the best carrier based in Europe and South African Airways was recognised for its operations in Africa.
More than 16.2 million people from over 97 different countries were surveyed for the Skytrax 2009 World Airline Awards.
