Central and eastern
Europe offer plenty of opportunities for holidaymakers looking for
affordable breaks this year, according to Abta - The Travel Association.
With the pound at a historic low against the euro, Abta said British travellers may be surprised by how far their holiday budget stretches in countries such as
Estonia,
Hungary,
Poland and
Romania.
The association compared the current affordability of eastern Europe to
Spain and
Greece in the 1970s, with two-course meals costing between £5 and £7 and pints of beer available for less than £1.
In terms of attractions, cities such as
Prague,
Tallinn,
Krakow and
Budapest are renowned for their cosmopolitan culture and historic appeal.
There are also plenty of natural spectacles to take in across eastern Europe, according to Abta, ranging from "unspoilt beaches and dramatic countryside" to nature reserves inhabited by wild wolves, bison and bears.
The travel association released a report earlier this year which indicated that 66 per cent of British people gain an emotional boost from their summer holiday.
