Singapore attraction marks 150th anniversary
The Botanic Gardens in Singapore is this year celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding and will host a number of special events and exhibitions to mark the occasion.
Founded in 1859 and originally modelled on London's Kew Gardens, the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) now welcomes more than three million visitors every year, making it one of the city-state's most popular attractions.
It boasts an orchid culture that is reportedly the most comprehensive in the world and one of the largest collections of rare palms in Asia.
In July this year, an exhibition dedicated to the pioneering scientists Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace will open at the gardens, followed by a photographic display exploring the world's rainforests due to open in December.
Singapore Tourism Board spokesperson Divya Panickar said: "The 150th anniversary of the founding of the SBG is truly a milestone event in the city's history.
"Like Singapore itself, the SBG keeps evolving to ensure it remains a vital and integral part in the lives of the city's residents and a highlight on any visitor's itinerary."
While it is known for its high-tech inner-city features, Singapore boasts a number of natural attractions including the Bukit Timah nature reserve, the Buloh wetlands and the Night Safari.
