California 'ideal' for eco-friendly holidays
California is the ideal destination for sustainable tourism, according to the state tourist board, with a range of innovations and initiatives making it "easy" for travellers to take eco-friendly trips.
Holidays can start with a flight to Los Angeles International Airport, which offers a green transfer service and uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on its pylons.
Los Angeles is also home to Universal Studios Hollywood, which is using the largest installation of LEDs in the history of theme park attractions to light its new Simpsons Ride.
San Francisco was rated one of the top ten green cities in the US by National Geographic owing to attributes including its number of parks and open spaces and its extensive public transport network.
Caroline Beteta, president and chief executive of the California Travel and Tourism Commission, said: "With millions of visitors touring California every year and leaving behind their carbon footprint, it is our responsibility as part of the tourism industry to not only provide sustainable travel alternatives, but to help make those options effortless so our travellers will embrace them on their next visit to the Golden State."
Flights to San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other destinations in California are provided by carriers including US Airways, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.
