The national tourist office of
Hungary has encouraged families looking for
affordable holidays to pay a visit to Lake Balaton this year.
Located about two hours from
Budapest Airport by car, Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in central
Europe.
The lake is a popular holiday destination with Hungarians, meaning that it boasts an enjoyable resort atmosphere during the summer months, according to the national tourist board.
As well as stunning scenery and good weather in peak holiday periods, the destination offers activities including sailing and kite-surfing on the water and horse riding, hiking and golf on land.
Visitors can stay in nearby resorts and towns such as Siofok, Keszthely and Balatonfured, which offer a variety of accommodation options as well as restaurants and attractions.
Flights to
Budapest are available from UK airports with
British Airways,
easyJet,
Malev and other carriers.
