Bulgaria tops Post Office affordability chart
Bulgaria is the most affordable mainstream holiday destination this year, according to the latest Holiday Costs report from the Post Office, ahead of Thailand and South Africa.
A basket of ten typical holiday items cost just over £42 in Bulgaria's Sunny Beach resort, making the country two-and-a-half times cheaper than the Caribbean island of Antigua, which was the most expensive destination surveyed.
Kenya and Malaysia were among the international destinations to feature in the top ten of the Post Office report, along with Croatia and Turkey.
The Post Office list of the ten most affordable holiday destinations also included Spain and Portugal, leading the organisation to suggest that the eurozone may not be as expensive as many people expect this year.
Head of travel services Sarah Munro said: "The eurozone has taken a bashing this year but our survey suggests that tourist outlets in many resorts are taking dramatic steps to encourage tourists.
"Despite the weak pound, this means that UK tourists who shop carefully could find that they get more than expected for their money."
The best destinations for an affordable city break this year, according to a recent study by the Post Office, are Budapest, Warsaw and Prague.
