Bus service proving popular at East Midlands Airport
East Midlands Airport has reported that its Skylink bus service has become increasingly popular with travellers in the past year, helping the hub to reduce its carbon footprint.
More than 1.3 million passengers travelled to the airport by bus between April 2008 and March this year, an increase of 13 per cent from the 1.15 million people who used the service in the previous 12-month period.
Compared to single occupancy car travel, the increased usage of public transport is thought to have saved some 1,800 of carbon dioxide emissions, enough to power around 1,500 homes for a year.
Kelly McHugh, Skylink marketing manager at East Midlands Airport, said: "'Skylink's 24-hour operation and 30 minutes daytime frequency is helping to drive the impressive passenger growth and demonstrates that passengers are embracing public transport to travel to the airport.
"Our greatest achievement has been a 22 per cent increase on the Derby and Loughborough Skylink, which has recently changed to a 24-hour service. We have also seen many more families using the Skylink services in the last year, due to the introduction of a £10 family return ticket."
Eastern Airways, bmi and easyJet are among the airlines based at East Midlands Airport, offering flights to Paris, Rome, Barcelona and other destinations.
