Brits 'searching for bargain holidays'
Rather than reducing demand for holidays, the credit crunch has led to an increased interest in affordable breaks, according to new research.
Tesco Travel Money commissioned a survey of more than 2,000 British people which found that more than half (54 per cent) are still planning to go abroad this year, with 29 per cent hoping to take two holidays or more.
A third (34 per cent) of the people polled said they are planning to spend less on their travels this year than they did in 2008.
Food and drink is the area where most British travellers (54 per cent) are planning to cut back this year, with 43 per cent intending to spend less on gifts and duty-free items.
A spokesperson for Tesco Travel Money said: "It's great to see that holidaymakers are pulling out the stops to get value for money and making sacrifices to ensure they get their two weeks in the sun."
The summer holiday season began for many people over the May bank holiday weekend, with some 1.8 million travellers heading abroad, according to Abta - The Travel Association.
Spain was once again the top destination, with the Balearics and the Canary Islands proving particularly popular.
